These sample tests can be downloaded, printed, and duplicated. If you make more than five copies, or use the same original with more than five students, please send an appropriate usage fee to the author.
The answer keys are "keyed" to Arkansas rules and regulations, but teachers in other states should be able to adjust the answer key for their states. In a few cases, teachers may have to rewrite a question. Officials from other State Police Departments are welcome to supply correct answers for their states, and to suggest questions that are compatible with their states. As soon as possible after the other state officials get back to me, I will upgrade these tests so that at least all possible answers are included in these tests, even if I don't get the other state answer keys posted immediately.

Version 2.xx of the DRIVERS.EXEm program simulates the official written Driver's Examination for states with laws similar to Arkansas. I wrote versions 1 and 2 of the program so that they used thousands and millions of questions similar, but not identical to, the official Arkansas questions as of 1997.
By 1998, Arkansas's exam was updated. I am working on version 3 of the program, which will be usable by every state, province and country with Driver's Exams. This is a lot of work, and it is going slow, because I am doing it on my own time. If you would like to help speed this along, download version 2.0 and register it by sending your registration fee to the author. Registration Fees for 2.0 help fund the development of version 3.0.
Version 2.0 allows you to specify three different reading levels for the test.
Three ways to keep testing records:
With all three versions of the program, all data older than three months in age is automatically deleted. There is a way to get around the one-person limit on unregistered programs. If you really want to know, let me know and I'll tell you, but it is a troublesome method for the user, so I recommend instead that you send a donation of any amount to the Literacy Council listed elsewhere on this page, along with a SASE (self-addressed-stamped-envelope). We will send you the "automatic" method of taking care of multiple student records (your registration password).

This page has been created by John Knoderer, also known as The Byte Man, webmaster for <www.MAZES.com>.
John has been a microcomputer programmer since 1977, a computer consultant since 1978. He started and ran THE SOFTWARE CENTER, first software store in the United States, from July 1979 to September 1981. John is perhaps best known for the Star Trek game that he wrote for the Radio Shack 16-K TRS-80 Level I and Level II computers in 77-78. He has written many other programs, one of which was featured nationwide on NBC Nightside and on many local newscasts in 1992.
John has a BS in General Management (Indiana University-Bloomington, 1974) and an MS in Education (Emporia State University-Kansas, 1979). He is working toward an eventual Ph.D., probably in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.
The original versions of this material were written to specifically help students on the Arkansas Driver's Exam. However, we have received feedback from users in other states that this material helped them pass their state's exam in spite of the differences.
John is a firm believer in Murphy's Laws' Computer Corrolary, which states "Any project, when complete, is obsolete!" In other words, this page will continue to evolve and improve.
Click here to read a full set of INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS, then after you understand the directions, click here to download the zip file for DRIVERS.EXEm version 2.04. (You will need PKUNZIP 204g to unzip this file (the two version numbers have NOTHING in common. They just happen to be the same this time.
Eventually, when I finish version 3.0, it will be posted here, and version 2.0 will no longer be supported. I am not providing a time estimate. If you would like to help speed the development, register your copy of version 2.0.
Click here to download the zip file for version 1.00 of FORCASTr.EXE, a program that will do Reading Level Analysis using the FORCAST method. You will also need to click here to download the zip file for BRT71ENR.EXE.
As I said above, some of the questions on these sample tests might have different correct answers in your state. Here's an example of a question that might have a different answer in your state.
1. Your tires must be no further than how many inches from the curb when you parallel park?
What's the answer in your state? You can find out Arkansas's answer by guessing from the above answers.
It certainly can't hurt. We have heard back from teachers who say that students passed because of our program. A well-placed RUMOR states that if you take a lot of different tests from this page, you will eventually see most of the questions from the real examinations.
ACTUALLY, there is no rumor. The Arkansas State Police allowed me to study all four official examinations. Colonel Rail and Major Causey encouraged me to rewrite and reword any question from their tests and use it in my programs. I firmly believe that the following is true:
--- If you take TEN DIFFERENT TESTS, and get 100% every time, you should get 100% on the official examination, even though you will never see exactly the same questions of my exams. Likewise, if you regularly get 90% on my exams, you most certainly will pass their examination.
You may never see exactly the same questions twice, but many of the questions are similar between these sample examinations and the real examinations. (I further hope to get the same "boon" from officials in other states.)
Please send your comments to [Webmaster (at) mazes.com]. Thank You.
If you write about a specific test question, please include TEST# and QUESTION#, and please QUOTE the question, both the way it was, and the way you suggest that it should be rewritten. Remember, because of the way the program is written, I probably have never seen exactly the question that you might write me about, so quote the ENTIRE QUESTION.
Governors, State Police Directors and other officials in the rest of this Internet Society, and organizations throughout this world of ours are invited to read this invitation to support the continuance of this project.
SHAREWARE: When you download DRIVERS.EXEm from this web page, you have downloaded the shareware version of this program. The shareware program has all of the features of the registered program with one exception. The shareware program allows you to take simulated examinations, lets you read and practice questions from various sections of the test, and keeps records on your progress, showing you, on the main menu, which sections you need to focus your improvement efforts on. There are many other features, too many to list.
REGISTERED: When you register your program, we send you a password that upgrades your program so that it can handle more students. Personally registered programs will handle up to five students at one time. Programs registered to schools and companies will handle UNLIMITED STUDENTS.
INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES may register their copy of our Drivers Exam program by mailing a donation of any amount (we hope you send at least $30) to the address below. You may, if you wish, PayPal a donation of at least $30 to one of the e-dresses listed below. You must include a SASE if you would like us to mail your registration codes and password to you. You may, if you wish, enclose a note saying "Please e-mail my registration to ________" (and include your e-mail address).
NON-PROFIT SCHOOLS & OTHER NON-PROFIT EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS can register DRIVERS.EXEm by sending a donation of at least $60 by mail or by PayPal.
SCHOOLS THAT CHARGE FOR DRIVER INSTRUCTION AND OTHER BUSINESS OR COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS should register their program by sending a donation of at least $100. In addition, you should, in the future, send yearly license fees. These fees will help pay for future development of programs that are being written, and will help fund maintenance and improvements to your program.

If you want to speed up the development of your state programs, send a list of the differences between our state laws and yours with your fee. For example, unless otherwise marked, what is the speed limit on interstate highways? on state highways between two cities? inside city limits? How far may you park from a curb? Also check those persnickety distance questions for your state, like how far you can park from a firehouse driveway? If you have any official or unofficial exams for your state, you may send them our way. All material marked "confidential" is hereby declared to be subject to a non-disclosure agreement. Just as you cannot identify the official Arkansas questions that are buried inside the Arkansas program cannot be identified, even by the State Police, all questions sent from other tests will be JUST AS ANONYMOUS, buried inside thousands and sometimes millions of similar questions, different every time. Your students will NOT be able to memorize your state examination, because every time the questions, answers, question order, and item order will be different. We look forward to issuing versions for every state in the United States, and ??? other municipalities around the world!!!
